Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontics moves teeth into better positions and, in growing patients, influences how the muscles and jaws develop. Treatment can be fixed or removable, and works by applying very light forces to the teeth or the jaws over time.

Fixed appliances

Fixed braces are bonded to the teeth and stay in place for the whole treatment. Because they work continuously, they can correct crowding, gaps and bite problems that removable appliances cannot reach.

Removable appliances

Removable appliances are taken out for eating and cleaning. They suit milder corrections and are often used in children while the jaws are still growing.

How long it takes

Treatment length depends on how far the teeth need to move and on age. Regular appointments are needed so the appliance can be adjusted as the teeth respond.

Care during treatment

Brushing takes longer with braces and matters more. Hard and sticky foods can damage the appliance and slow everything down.

After treatment a retainer is usually needed to hold the new position while the surrounding tissues settle.
